Jack Dorsey #StartSmall Awards $500,000 to LYRIC
12 July 2021 – San Francisco: #StartSmall, Jack Dorsey’s philanthropic initiative, has donated $500,000 to LYRIC (www.lyric.org), the San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to supporting marginalized LGBTQQ+ youth to build community, gain access to critical support services, and develop the life and leadership skills necessary to thrive. The grant, made possible by the CEO and co-founder of Twitter and Square, will help strengthen and expand supportive programming and safe spaces at LYRIC for its community of youth and their mentors to effectively create solutions and strategies to overcome the trauma of violence that many of them have experienced throughout their lives. Close to half of LYRIC’s youth participants, ages 10-24, have been impacted by violence, bullying and similar perils, and these dangers have increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“LYRIC is so grateful to Jack Dorsey and #StartSmall for this transformative donation to help expand facilities due to a big leap in demand and LYRIC’s growth in recent years, and to ensure the safety of LGBTQQ+ youth, especially to ensure their safety in the wake of COVID,” said Toni Newman, Interim Executive Director for LYRIC. “We work with the city’s most marginalized young people by providing direct services such as health and housing, and together build lasting job and personal leadership skills. They are our community’s future, and leaders of tomorrow.”
Dorsey’s generous #StartSmall grant greatly helps LYRIC push forward with its current Flourish with LYRIC Campaign (www.lyricflourishing.org). With the exceptional $500,000 #StartSmall grant, LYRIC will have raised over $2.1 million toward a $2.5 million goal to expand and renovate its LGBTQQ+ Youth Center in San Francisco’s Castro District, a renowned national model for helping youth not only survive but to thrive since 1988. The Flourish with LYRIC Campaign is a broad-based community effort, raising essential funds at all levels from LYRIC alumni, individual friends, foundations, public agencies and progressive businesses throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
“With 85% of the campaign goal now realized, the Flourish with LYRIC Campaign is now on the threshold of the exciting public phase of this initiative,” according to a statement issued by the LYRIC Board of Directors. “Until now, campaign volunteers and staff have been primarily focused on past contributors and those identified through volunteer and donor networks. During the public phase, LYRIC will now prioritize seeking funds to close the $400,000 gap to meet the $2.5 million goal, and pursue this through an even broader-based community effort to attract additional supporters who are inspired by what they’re now learning about LYRIC’s extraordinary effectiveness and success.”
In addition to #StartSmall and Jack Dorsey, among LYRIC’s leading and most generous supporters since the campaign was launched are: The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Crankstart, and the City and County of San Francisco, as well as hundreds of individual and business donors giving at all levels.
LYRIC is a leader in the San Francisco Bay Area offering safe spaces, workforce development, healthcare navigation, individual counseling, and group-based community building to marginalized low-income LGBTQQ+ youth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, LYRIC has continued its vital work for LGBTQQ youth in our community. LYRIC’s mission is to build community and inspire positive social change through education enhancement, career trainings, health promotion, and leadership development with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. You’re six years old. Mom’s in the hospital. Dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for. 1. Ice cream. 2. Kung Fu movies. 3. Burning things. 4. Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. 5. Constructions cranes. 6. Me. You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own. A play about depression and the lengths we will go for those we love.
“A heart-wrenching, hilarious play… One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression—and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop!” —The Guardian

By the Nov, eight big Princess ships will be once again taking guests to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexico, Hawaii and the California Coast. … Cruise lines are planning restarts in various phases in 2021, including a number of smaller European niche brands. … Although I won’t list them, some cruise lines are offering “insane” deals to recruit passengers following the long, otherwise very costly pandemic shutdown.
Tue Jun 22nd Holland America Line is gearing up to restart cruising out of Port of San Diego in California beginning with a season of cruises to Mexico, Hawaii and along the California coast aboard Koningsdam and Zuiderdam. All sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the season will begin Oct 23rd 2021, with Nieuw Amsterdam. The ship will be joined by the new Rotterdam Nov 3, Eurodam Nov 14 and Nieuw Statendam Nov 21. Celebrity Cruises: Excitement, anticipation, and awe. These three words captured the feeling of passengers and onlookers as Celebrity Apex sailed out of the Port of Athens, on Sat Jun 19th, to begin her maiden voyage and first summer season in the Aegean. The much-anticipated sailing marks an historic moment for the company, which had originally planned to introduce its newest ship in late Mar 2020. Guests and fans of the brand have waited ever-since with huge anticipation to experience the fleet’s new flagship.

Sea Days! While it is all a matter of choice, the well respected Cruise Critic has selected 8 ships for the “best days at sea”.
When Royal Caribbean’s gargantuan and game-changing Oasis of the Seas debuted as the then-world’s largest ship in 2009, people wondered if anyone would bother to get off the ship in port, as it could take a week to try out all the onboard activities. With 24 dining options, 21 pools and hot tubs, multiple live performance venues (including an ice rink and AquaTheater for high-diving shows) and seven “neighborhoods,” the ship practically guarantees that no one will have trouble finding something to do. Well, lots of cruise travelers prefer spending time onboard – including during port calls – and the top 8 cruise ships for “stay aboard” cruising are:
Norwegian Escape
Carnival Vista
Harmony of the Seas
Disney Fantasy
Queen Mary 2
Crystal Serenity
Celebrity Reflection
Regal Princess
Fri Jun 25th Further News from Carnival: “Our strategic decision to accelerate the exit of 19 ships has lowered our capacity growth to roughly 2.5% compounded annually from 2019 through 2025, that’s down from 4.5% pre-COVID,” said Arnold Donald, president and CEO of Carnival Corporation, on the company’s second quarter earnings call on Thursday. “Moreover, we have opportunistically rebalanced our portfolio through the ship exits as well as the ship transfer and a modification to our newbuild schedule, the combination of which will transfer 8,000 berths from our Continental European brands to America’s favorite cruise line, Carnival Cruise Line to optimize the current environment, maximize cash generation and improve our return on invested capital.”
For Sale! Carnival Corporation’s AIDA Cruises brand today announced the AIDAcara has been sold and will leave the fleet soon after 25 years in service for the German cruise brand. A buyer was not named.

They returned home to Florida on a private flight arranged by the cruise company.
Single Travel:Solo cruising is about to get a major upgrade on Atlas Ocean Voyages. The cruise line just unveiled its first Solo Suites – 183-square-foot escapes that travelers won’t have to pay extra for to get all to themselves. Each suite comes with a queen-sized bed, television, desk, mini fridge, and en suite bathroom featuring a rainfall shower. Most suites also have balconies from which to enjoy the expansive ocean views.
Sat Jun 26th US Cruising: When the Celebrity Edge departs Port Everglades today, it will mark the first revenue cruise with paying passengers on a large cruise ship sailing from a U.S. port in more than 15 months.
