Throughout its closure, the property has displayed a larger-than-life heart on the hotel, which will continue to be lit until the hotel opens its doors.  The heart was lit as a symbol of hope during the pandemic and mirrors the many artists’ hearts across San Francisco. While the illuminated heart will disappear as guests fill the rooms, the spirit of the heart lives on in the exceptional service offered to those who stay at Parc 55, A Hilton Hotel.  Along with its “big sister” property next door, Hilton San Francisco Union Square, Parc 55, A Hilton Hotel, comprises a complex that houses the largest self contained hotel event space in San Francisco.

At 11am, Thursday, May 19th, the festivities will begin with a special “ribbon cutting” and series of special activations, including  a live DJ, signature cocktails, light bites, a post card writing station and more.

Parc 55 San Francisco, A Hilton Hotel is part of San Francisco’s world-class Union Square with its internationally recognized retail brands, restaurants and Broadway style theatre. Muni Metro is directly adjacent to the hotel at the Powell Street Station, providing easy access to all of San Francisco’s classic neighborhoods.  BART is also adjacent and offers direct in-terminal service to San Francisco International Airport.

Parc 55 San Francisco offers a sleek boutique hotel experience with spacious rooms, near Union Square, in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Also opening on May 19th, the contemporary Cable 55 restaurant is found in the sleek Parc 55 San Francisco – a Hilton Hotel, offering tourists and residents a stylish venue and delicious change of pace from rich American classics by infusing them with a light, local flair. As a Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Restaurant, Cable 55 is dedicated to sustainably serving guests.

Opening shortly after the hotel will be beloved modern hot spot, Kin Khao, which serves delicious Thai food that stays true to its origin, made with seasonal produce and sustainably raised or caught meats and seafood.

The property also boasts a fitness center, access to the pool and spa at Hilton San Francisco Union Square, a FedEx Business Center and on-site gift shop.

Caravanserai Project Hosts Pitch Competition & Graduation Ceremony Thursday, May 26: 5pm – 7pm at the Palm Springs Art Museum

Caravanserai Project Hosts Pitch Competition & Graduation Ceremony
Thursday, May 26: 5pm – 7pm at the Palm Springs Art Museum

Supporting Mission-Driven Leaders Along Their Journeys
www.caravanseraiproject.org

16 May 2022 – Palm Springs, CA:  “The best way to predict the future is to create it,” said famed entrepreneur and thought leader Peter Drucker. Such is the idea behind the Caravanserai Project(www.caravanseraiproject.org) the innovative nonprofit dedicated to supporting young social impact entrepreneurs dedicated to addressing problems in education, nutrition, housing, social justice and workforce development. On Thursday, May 26 (5pm – 7pm), Caravanserai will “graduate” its next class of mission-driven innovators in a special ceremony and “pitch competition” at the Palm Springs Art Museum (101 N. Museum Drive).

”Many see the support provided to startup mission-driven entrepreneurs, for profit and nonprofit, as a risk-taking mission,” says Mihai Patru, Executive Director of the Caravanserai Project. “Yet, the real risk lies in ignoring these entrepreneurs, especially emerging within historically underserved communities, whose in-depth understanding of decades-long challenges leads to relevant solutions.”

Creating the space for – and a “class” of  — innovative entrepreneurs is the idea behind Caravanserai’s  SEED Lab Pre-Accelerator: an 8-month (90 hour) program for early-stage social entrepreneurs. Developed in partnership with the University of California Riverside Extension, the SEED Lab Pre Accelerator aims to tap the deep reservoir of unrecognized talent within historically marginalized and under-served communities and support their efforts to identify and develop pioneering paths out of inherited problems that have buried and muffled those voices.

“Specifically, we have prioritized these social innovators in the Inland Empire and beyond whose work has the potential to turbo charge irreversible system changes within their communities and environments,” explains Patru. “The event on May 26 is part celebration and part supportive ‘Shark Tank’ for these inspiring graduates.  Our goal is to inspire, but also to define goals for solving real world,  real time problems. This is not just a philosophical exercise.”

Since 2018, four cohorts of SEED Lab fellows have graduated from the program, demonstrating the success of their ventures and initiatives that provided a space where they access tools to build sustainable and impactful businesses. In addition, they learned how to develop financial resources, meet peers and exchange experiences. The Caravanserai Project targets from startup to advanced entrepreneurs within historically marginalized and underserved communities. In 2020 and 2021, over 1200 entrepreneurs attended its programs. Almost 80% of Caravanserai beneficiaries identified themselves as women and 79% as BIPOC. To facilitate access to these specific communities of entrepreneurs, Caravanserai Project has established partnerships with regional and national organizations such as UC-Riverside, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Inland Empire Community Foundation, Inland Empire Community Collaborative, Making Hope Happen San Bernardino, Alianza Coachella Valley, The LGBTQ Center in Palm Springs and Coachella, Independent Sector among others.

“Connecting with established entrepreneurs, experts and other networks is crucial in advancing mission-driven enterprises and ensuring their long-term success,” says Patru.   “The Caravanserai model is about building a successful business that has the right human, economic, and material resources to grow,

stay relevant, deliver impact, and create jobs.” The name Caravanserai is a metaphor for the mission and vision to provide a safe space for entrepreneurs to get the support they need and continue their journey forward. A caravanserai [KAR-AH–VAN–SE-RAY]was a well-known meeting place along trade routes from Asia, North Africa to Southeast Europe. It provided merchants and travelers with a safe place to rest and opportunities to exchange and trade goods and acquire information about the challenges ahead. It had a crucial part in the cross-fertilization and exchanges of cultures by exposing travelers and locals to new ideas, beliefs, and languages.

Caravanserai Project was founded in 2016 as a mission-driven hybrid venture whose goal is to support social impact entrepreneurs (for profit and nonprofit relevant organizations that are working towards irreversible system change. Caravanserai Project designs and implements technical assistance and capacity building programs with a particular focus on entrepreneurs and organizations in the Inland Empire and Southern California but works extensively across the nation and internationally as well.

Priority is given to applicants representing historically marginalized and underserved communities. To date, over 47 fellows graduated from the program, each year up to 12 new fellows joining the program.

San Francisco’s Castro Theatre Marks 100th Birthday with Week of Classic Films

June 3 – 12 Curated by Decade

Wednesday, June 22 Celebrates the Centennial with Day of Movies Filmed in San Francisco

Annual LGBTQ Frameline Film Festival Returns June 16 – 26

13 May 2022 – San Francisco.  100 years ago next month, San Francisco’s Nasser family opened the Castro Theatre: an event that came to define an era and a neighborhood. A century on, it is the longest continually family owned movie palace in the United States. To mark the occasion, the Nasser Family in partnership with Another Planet Entertainment (www.apeconcerts.com) is scheduling a week of film screenings featuring iconic movies from each decade of the Castro’s history, June 3 – 12, some family and children’s programming and a “Happy Birthday” special event on June 22 – the actual date of the Castro’s opening day in 1922 —  with movies filmed in San Francisco. Concurrent with the centennial celebrations, the LGBTQ Frameline Film Festival will return after a two-year hiatus.

“It continues to be my family’s honor and privilege to own the Castro Theatre,” said Steve Nasser, of Bay Properties, Inc. “After two years of COVID-forced closures, it is such a joy and a pleasure to reopen and to work with the very best, and most sensitive local producers around, Another Planet Entertainment.” Steve Nasser and Elaine Nasser Padian are the third generation of this family to lead the company, founded by their grandfather Abraham and his sons having conceived and constructed the Castro Theatre in 1922.

“The Castro is much more than a theatre,” said Mary Conde, Senior Vice President for Another Planet who oversees the overall Castro Theatre Project. “An LGBTQ touchstone, a film-lovers icon, a community landmark and an architectural gem, the Castro is unique. Another Planet is honored to restore, renovate and revitalize the Castro as a home to everything we’ve come to love about the Castro, and expand its audience.”

Tickets for the special week of screenings are $16 weekdays and $18 weekend with the morning youth programming at $10/adult $6/youth up to age 12 and may be purchased online starting May 13 at 9am at https://apeconcerts.com/events/castro-100th-birthday-220603-22

While there are no vaccine or masking requirements for entry, all attendees are encouraged to have been fully vaccinated and boosted. Masking and adherence to social distancing and proper hygiene protocols are strongly encouraged.

Another Planet Entertainment is partnering with Bay Properties, Inc., owners of the Castro Theatre, on an evolution and preservation of San Francisco’s world-renowned entertainment and LGBTQ community landmark. With a long-standing history of working to preserve and improve historic buildings such as the Fox Theater in Oakland, the Greek Theatre in Berkeley and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Another Planet seeks to enhance the Castro Theatre by implementing significant improvements to the sound, lighting, production, HVAC, ADA access and the theatre’s trademark marquee, among other facets of the building: all of this, always, with an eye to honoring its unique place in the lives of the Castro and celebrating its communities and residents.

The Castro Theatre was built in 1922 by pioneer San Francisco theatre entrepreneurs, the Nasser brothers, who started with a nickelodeon in 1908 in the Castro neighborhood. The Castro was designed by then-unknown architect Timothy Pflueger, who later designed the Paramount Theatre, the Pacific Cost Stock Exchange, the Pacific Telephone Building and the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill. Timothy Pflueger chose an exterior design reminiscent of a Mexican cathedral. The large windows, the shape of the roof line of the front wall of the building and the plaster wall decorations all combine to convey a look of grandeur in keeping with the large scale of many theatres built in the 1920s.  Sound was installed in 1928.  The marquee and the vertical neon sign are additions from the late 1930s, but the glazed tile street foyer, ornate tent-like box office and the wooden doors are all from the early 1922.

The Castro’s interior is very diverse. One can sense Spanish, Asian and Italian influences. The auditorium seats over 1400 in a fantasy setting that is both lavish and intimate. Both side walls of the auditorium are covered with classic motif murals which were created in a wet plaster process called scrafitto. This type of wall decoration is rare. On either side of the stage and screen (the small original screen has long ago been replaced with a large screen) are large organ grills. The Art Deco chandelier dates from 1937 when a small electrical fire destroyed the original parchment fixture. It is one of the few remaining movie palaces from the 1920s that has been in continuous operation under same family ownership.
