7 June 2017 – San Mateo, CA: Were you there? Woodstock? The Beatles at Shea Stadium? Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival in the “Summer of Love”? Now, add to those classic one-moment-in-history concerts The Family Stone in a special collaboration with The Oakland Symphony: Monday, June 12 at The San Mateo County Fair (www.sanmateocountyfair.com). One of the foremost creators of “The San Francisco Sound”, The Family Stone revisits that storied time of tie-die and groovy tunes in a special collaboration with one of the Bay Area’s most esteemed orchestras, The Oakland Symphony. Plus, in what has become a first-Monday-of-the-Fair tradition, VIP tickets to the concert ($50) include table seating with a gourmet appetizers and wine. Regular seating, as always, is free with fair admission. The concert goes from 7:30pm – 10pm.

“This is musical history in the making” said Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Events Center and Fair, noting that the tradition of the Bay Area as a hotbed of music from 50 years ago lives on today. “50 years after Sly and the Family Stone first wowed us during the Summer of Love, the Family Stone returns with Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Greg Errico and Jerry Martini who helped pioneer the “psychedelic soul” sound of the era. It doesn’t get much hipper or groovier than this.”

For nine days, June 10 – 18, fairgoers can dance and groove to the Summer of Love beats that made history. In addition to The Family Stone / Oakland Symphony collaboration, the Fair concert series will feature the “East Bay Sounds” of Tower of Power (June 14 & 15), War (June 10), a special tribute Summer of Love-Live! (June 11) and the amazing Paramount’s Original Laser Spectacular, featuring the music of Pink Floyd (June 13). The Fair’s final weekend culminates with the pioneers of street funk The Ohio Players (June 16); the ultimate summer party band Smash Mouth (June 17) and traditional Latin Music focused Día De La Feria (June 18). About Recology:
Recology is the recycling, composting, and trash collection company for the City of San Francisco as well as over 26 communities in California, Oregon and Washington. We were founded in San Francisco almost 100 years ago by the workers that drove the horses and carts through their routes collecting trash, separating out bottles, cans, newspapers and rags to sell as scrap. These early-day recyclers formed a co-op that has evolved over the ears into the Recology of today. A modern 100% employee-owned company that remains dedicated to those core values.

Our operations have also evolved over time to meet our customers’ changing needs. Today, we are not a traditional garbage company. Instead we brand ourselves a resource recovery company, We feel the clothing swap Suzanne hosts each year at Recology blends perfectly with our vision statements that says “at Recology we see a world without waste.”

Each year, San Franciscans send more than 39 million pounds of textiles to the landfill, enough to fill 1500 Muni buses. That is over 4,00 pounds each hour. Textiles are one of the top three materials that San Franciscans send to the landfill that can easily be reused or recycled.

We see the clothing swap as one of the ways to raise awareness of the issue and by hosting encourage people to come up with new and innovative ways to keep textiles out of the landfill and reduce consumption.

2 June 2017 – San Mateo, CA: The future can be seen today at the first ever Tech Action Zone at the San Mateo County Fair! New this year, the Tech Action Zone will showcase robot and drone demonstrations offered by local organizations. Fairgoers will be able to view the latest from FIRST Robotics teams and also learn how to operate, fly and photograph with aerial “quadcopters” from FAA-Certified “Drone Expert” Beto Lopez.

Over nine days of diverse entertainment, June 10 – 18, the San Mateo County Fair 2017 is living up to its “Tradition Meets Innovation” motto like never before. In addition to this year’s inaugural Tech Action Zone, the public will have the opportunity to enjoy game coding workshops from the Digital Monkey School located in Belmont, learn to fold recycled origami, make crafts with upcycling designer fabrics, and compete in contests showcasing creative STEM and sustainability ideas of their own.

“This is a uniquely San Mateo experience,” observed Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Events Center and Fair, “and the San Mateo County Fair is the perfect place to experience and enjoy the cutting-edge innovation, technology and sustainable living opportunities that are integral to our community.”

“It’s like nothing we’ve seen or done before,” said Joseph Lees, Department Coordinator for the San Mateo County Fair Technology & Industrial Arts Department. “There is already quite a buzz about the contests and the Tech Action Zone which will be interactive, informative and fun – all in one!”

Again this year there are contests featuring imaginative ideas or actions that demonstrate sustainability and creative repurposing of used cardboard in the Upcycle category.

But many area residents will enter the annual sustainable living contests as a family or community affair with parents, kids, husbands, wives, extended family members and neighbors coming together to enter new ideas every year. Participants such as the Brisbane Community Garden’s perennial compost contestants, Marge Kastner who, with her husband, has created award winning entries by repurposing trash collected from walks along the Bay or local artist Paul Powell, who creates multi-media art such as the fairgoer favorite, a large scorpion constructed from abandoned farm machinery parts.

FabMo (Fabric & More), Lyngso Garden Materials, Inc., and Reach & Teach are the sponsors of the 2017 Sustainable Living Special Awards. Visitors can see their displays at the Sustainable Living Exhibit featuring cutting edge local organizations demonstrating the latest in technological and sustainable products for a healthy planet.

Sponsors for the 2017 San Mateo County Fair are: Pepsi, Coors Light, Blue Moon, Sprint, Mattress Firm, Furniture Firm, Groupon, Lucky California, Lucky, Lifetime, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, xfinity, First Choice Communications, Great Destinations, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, SamTrans, Goldrush Getaways, Verizon Cellular Sales, Welk Resorts, The San Francisco Examiner and The Daily Journal.

The San Mateo County Fair — “Where Tradition Meets Innovation” — is The Peninsula’s premier, community event for family fun and entertainment: June 10 – 18, 2017. Visit www.sanmateocountyfair.com often for regular updates, contest rules, schedules, promotions, and information.
